Connect AI tools (MCP)

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use tools. Alara Space runs an MCP server, so an assistant you connect can:

• List your spaces and browse their page trees.
• Read pages as Markdown, search across them, and read comments, versions and text attachments.
• Create spaces, pages and folders; write or append to pages; rename, move, trash and restore them.
• Comment on pages and save versions.

It acts as you, in one workspace: the one you created its token in. Everything it writes is attributed to you and appears in the page history. See the full tool reference.

   Create a token

   In Alara Space, open Settings → AI & MCP and select New token. Name it after where you will use it, choose Read only or Read & write, and pick when it expires.

   Copy it straight away

   The token is shown once. The same dialog gives you ready-made configuration for the clients below, with the token filled in.

   Add the server to your client

   The server address is:

   https://alara-space.waiindustries.org/api/mcp

   It uses the Streamable HTTP transport and a bearer token in the Authorization header.

Replace alara_pat_YOUR_TOKEN with your token, or copy the snippet from Settings where it is already filled in.

Once connected, ask in plain language. For example:

• "List my Alara spaces and summarise what is in the Engineering space."
• "Create a page called Release checklist under Guides with a checklist for our deploy steps."
• "Find the onboarding page and add a section about expense claims at the end."
• "Read the comments on the Q3 plan and draft replies."

Settings → AI & MCP lists your tokens in the current workspace with when each was created, last used and expires. Revoke cuts a token off immediately. Tokens are personal: you only see and manage your own. To use several workspaces, create a token in each.

• 401 or "Invalid or expired token": the token was mistyped, revoked or has expired. Create a new one.
• The assistant cannot create or edit: the token is read only. Create a read & write token.
• "Page not found" for a page you can see: it is in a different workspace from the token's, or it is in the trash.
• "This space is archived": an admin archived the space, so it can be read but not changed. Archived spaces are also left out of list_spaces and search. An admin can restore it.
• "Whiteboards are drawn, not written": whiteboards can be read (their text) but only edited in the app.
